The Plow that Broke the Plains / The Heiress

The Plow that Broke the Plains
(Pare Lorentz, 1936, USA, 25 minutes)

The Heiress (William Wyler, 1949, USA, 116 minutes)
One of William Wyler’s most ambitious films, The Heiress derives from Henry James’s novel Washington Square and includes an original score by American composer Aaron Copland. It will be preceded by The Plow that Broke the Plains, a celebrated documentary about the Dust Bowl with a score developed in close collaboration between director Pare Lorentz and Copland’s contemporary (and fellow Nadia Boulanger protégé) Virgil Thompson.
