“Varone’s dances are “irresistibly dancey . . . and convey depths of emotion through highly charged, physically exciting choreography, making him a rarity among his generation.”
—NEW YORK TIMES
DOUG VARONE
AND DANCERS

Doug Varone’s dances range from dark, ambiguous dramas told through the subtlest of gestures to whirlwinds of energy that threaten to dissolve into chaos. Aside from the emotional depth that pervades his narratives, his trademark is his close relationship to classical music. Not for nothing has he become a favorite choreographer for opera houses: for the Metropolitan Opera alone he’s provided the choreography for Tobias Picker’s An American Tragedy, Strauss’s Salome, Berlioz’s Les Troyens, and a new production of Stravinsky’s Le sacre du printemps. For 19 years Doug Varone and Dancers have provided “a whirl of spins, tumbles, leaps, lifts, and crashes . . . fraught with emotional intensity.” (Boston Globe)
For SummerScape 2007, Varone will apply his classical music expertise to a new work, Victorious, commissioned by the Fisher Center and based on music by Edward Elgar, performed to live music.
