In this unjustly neglected late opera by Richard Strauss, the powerful god Jupiter and the lowly donkey driver Midas compete for the love of the beautiful Danae. The story is a Mozartean blend of comedy, romance, and drama on the themes of transformation and the acceptance of life’s changes, all brilliantly illuminated by Strauss’s orchestral mastery. Dynamic young stage director Kevin Newbury collaborates with renowned architect Rafael Viñoly on this new production, which is sure to be a highlight of the 2011 musical season.
The Opera Talk for Die Liebe der Danae will take place at 1 pm on Sunday, July 31 in Sosnoff Theater. Free and open to the public. Opera Talks are presented in memory of Sylvia Redlick Green.
