Faith and Politics
In Liszt’s later years, spirituality and religion played an increasingly important role. He became an abbé by taking minor orders in the Catholic Church in 1865, and produced numerous choral works on religious themes. At the same time he devoted himself to developing musical culture and education in his native Hungary. His late visionary works extended tonality and aphoristic phrasing beyond established conventions, anticipating the radical musical developments of Debussy and Schoenberg.
