1938, directed by William Wyler
A willful New Orleans belle breaks social rules and loses her fiancé (Henry Fonda) on the eve of the Civil War. When fever strikes the city, she tries to nurse him back to health. Bette Davis won an Academy Award for this female character, who rivals Scarlett O’Hara of the following year’s Gone with the Wind and who inspired Davis’s portrayal of Regina in The Little Foxes (to be shown July 7 and 10).
