“A remarkably thoughtful program… the whole evening radiated uncommon care and intelligence.” —New York Times

To create this genre-defying new performance, Sarah Rothenberg draws inspiration from Marcel Proust’s writings, the memoirs of his housekeeper Céleste Albaret, and the music, paintings, and places invoked in his literary works.

Conceived and directed by Sarah Rothenberg, this musical production includes performances by Nicholas Phan, tenor; Boson Mo, violin; Sarah Rothenberg, piano; Henry Stram as the Narrator; Nancy Hume as Céleste; with costume and scenic design by Tony Award-winner Marina Draghici; lighting design by Jennifer Tipton; and projection design by Obie Award-winner Hannah Wasileski.

In 1907, Marcel Proust famously withdrew to his cork-lined bedroom on the Boulevard Hausmann to write À la recherche du temps perdu, a remarkable portrait of fin-de-siècle Paris. In The Marcel Proust Project, Sarah Rothenberg recreates the author’s meticulous world, blending literary scholarship with illustrative compositions by Gabriel Fauré, Reynaldo Hahn, Leon Delafosse, Claude Debussy, Frederic Chopin, Ludwig von Beethoven, and Maurice Ravel in an afternoon concert that is sure to delight.

“A brilliant idea ingeniously used” —Washington Post
