The program begins with Scottish Fantasy for violin and orchestra, a four-movement work based on Scottish folk melodies. Young soloist and former Asian Youth Orchestra concertmaster Tianpei Ai will perform the part Bruch originally dedicated to virtuoso violinist Pablo de Sarasate. In a nod to the Scottish tradition, listeners will hear the prominence given to the harp in this composition.

Das Lied von der Erde ("The Song of the Earth") is one of Mahler's best-loved works, written during a dark time in the composer's life. This presentation of Mahler's song cycle features mezzo-soprano Susan Platts and tenor Charles Reid. Inspired by a collection of Chinese verse about the end of life, Mahler avoided calling Das Lied his ninth symphony, since many composers died after writing their ninth.
