Acclaimed jazz pianist Dan Tepfer makes music at the intersection of jazz standards and avant-garde compositional practices. Joined by members of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), Tepfer will use the Yamaha Disklavier digital piano in combination with iPhones and iPads to explore live musical improvisation and computer-driven algorithms through acoustic sound.

Joining Tepfer are ICE musicians Joshua Rubin, clarinet; Rebekah Heller, bassoon; Alice Teyssier, flute; and Ryan Muncy, saxophone.

The New York Times says of Dan Tepfer, "As a pianist, he combines superb technique with a complex set of impulses: he’s a deeply rational improviser drawn to the unknown.”

ICE is described by the New York Times as “one of the most accomplished and adventurous groups in new music.”

“As someone who grew up with a passion for physics and computer programming, I'm also fascinated by the possibilities offered by algorithmic music — music generated from a set of rules,” says Tepfer. “With computers, algorithms can be written to respond to material they receive in real time, making them ideal improvisation partners. It could be said that much of the music we love is already a mix between the algorithmic and the spiritual; certainly the music of Bach fits this description. Involving computers allows us to continue this algorithmic tradition with greater complexity and speed while sacrificing none of the spiritual, since everything begins with live, human improvisation… What interests me in this project is what happens when we explore the possibilities of algorithms, which are inherently digital, but present their results in an entirely acoustic way.”
