The figure of Wagner himself (played by Trevor Howard) makes an appearance in the monumental historical drama Ludwig (1972), directed by Luchino Visconti. In its initial American distribution, Ludwig was drastically cut; scholars agree that it must be seen in its fully restored version for Visconti’s vision to be appreciated.
