The first of TŌN’s two Beethoven & Brahms concerts features both tragedy and triumph. Brahms’s bittersweet Fourth Symphony contrasts joyful and sorrowful moods throughout. In the final movement, he takes a chorale theme from J.S. Bach and builds 30 continuous variations, transforming the Baroque into the Romantic. Meanwhile, Beethoven’s Eroica journeys through anguish and grief in its searing funeral march before arriving at a finale filled with a massive set of thematic variations that gradually layer in complexity before reaching a heroic climax.
