The second of TŌN’s Beethoven & Brahms concerts pairs two symphonies that pulse with kinetic energy. Wagner called Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony “the apotheosis of the dance” for its relentless rhythms that give the listener a palpable feeling of physical momentum. The outer movements of Brahms’s Third Symphony capture a similar energetic spirit. Upon hearing it for the first time, Clara Schumann wrote to the composer, “What a work! What a poem! What a harmonious mood pervades the whole!”
