SUMMERSCAPE!


Join us as SummerScape and the Bard Music Festival present “Elgar and His World” Ensconced in The Richard B. Fisher Center for he Performing Arts at Bard College, an outstanding facility designed by Frank Gehry that became an architectural landmark the day of its debut, SummerScape is an annual, world-class performing arts series of opera, theater, music, dance, and film events distinguished by rich and imaginative programming. Highlights this year include:
The 18th annual Bard Music Festival,“Elgar and His World,” offering concerts by world-renowned performers of music from the many facets of Edward Elgar’s world—church, concert stage, and music hall—plus a scholarly symposium that attracts great musicological minds from all over the globe
Two operas by rediscovered musical genius Alexander von Zemlinsky, based on stories by Elgar’s notorious countryman Oscar Wilde— A Florentine Tragedy and The Dwarfand directed by Olivier Tambosi, founder of the Neue Oper Wien, with sets and costumes by the contemporary “Edwardian” art team of McDermott and McGough
George Bernard Shaw’s Saint Joan, one of the great plays of the 20th century, directed by Gregory Thompson, 2006 recipient of England’s coveted Young Vic’s Jerwood Director Award
Two dance works commissioned for the Fisher Center: one by Doug Varone and Dancers, the other by MacArthur Fellowship–winning choreographer Susan Marshall
The Sorcerer, the first full-length opera by Gilbert and Sullivan, in a new production directed by Erica Schmidt

The celebrated Spiegeltent, back by popular demand which serves as an additional performance venue for cabaret, music, and dance, as well as a place for audiences to share a meal and enjoy SummerScape
Film Festival: British Postwar Films offering such masterpieces as The Third Man and Black Narcissus and the madcap romps produced by Ealing Studios.
